The walk

A walk through the garden

Nineteen steps. Four parts. One record.

Picture the enormous building again. Every window faces inward, onto one garden. This walk goes through it, one question at a time.

Philosophy is the questions a body asks because it is alive. Where it came from. What it is. Whether it is alone. Whether it is free. How it should live.

The walk takes them in that order. It starts with the coldest questions, about what there is at all, and ends with the warmest, about how to live. The method never changes. Every step uses only what the steps before it gave you. Every answer stands beside what would break it.

Walk it in order, or wander. Every step says, at the top, what it stands on. A wanderer always knows where they are.

Part One · What is there

The ground the garden stands on. One thing you cannot refuse, and what follows from it: why there is anything, what it is made of, why tomorrow can be trusted, how things move and last.

  1. 1What can you be sure of?One record exists. You just made it.Logic.
  2. 2What had to be true? For one sentence to be read, four things must already be true. None of them is chosen.Logic and metaphysics.
  3. 3Why is there something rather than nothing?Nothing did not lose to something. Nothing was never in the running.Metaphysics.
  4. 4What is the world made of?What exists is what has been written.Ontology.
  5. 5Why trust tomorrow? Two readings of one now. No gap between them, because they were never two places.Knowing.
  6. 6How does anything move, or stay itself? The continuum was the reading, not the running. What persists is the pattern.Change.

Part Two · Who is asking

The window. What a mind is, who you are, whether anyone else is in here, what happens when you sleep, and whether you choose.

  1. 7How can matter feel?Mind and matter were never two kinds of thing.Philosophy of mind.
  2. 8Who am I?You are not a thing continuing through time. You are a pattern time is writing. The self.
  3. 9Am I alone in here? There is one interior. The asking was always happening in it.Other minds.
  4. 10Am I free? You are not free of constraint. You are free within it. What you couple, you own.Freedom.

Part Three · How a body lives

The warm questions. What a fact can tell you to do, what is alive, what death takes, why there is suffering, and what it is all for.

  1. 11Can a fact tell you what to do?The is was never separated from the ought. There was one coupling.Ethics.
  2. 12What is alive, and who counts?Life is chemistry that has crossed the copying threshold. The obligation is not species-specific. It is structure-specific.Life and standing.
  3. 13What happens when we die?The window closes at death. The interior does not.Death.
  4. 14Why do we suffer? The same break that opens the possibility of love opens the possibility of damage.Evil.
  5. 15What is the point? You are meaning happening, not meaning searching.Meaning.

Part Four · How far it reaches

The whole garden. Beauty and music, play and story and language, whether there is only one world, and how to live in it.

  1. 16Why does beauty move us?Beauty is the registration of coherence.Aesthetics.
  2. 17Why do we play, tell stories and speak?Play expands the corridor. Narrative transfers a trajectory. Language compresses the record.Play, story, language.
  3. 18Is there only one world, and does it end? There is one building. It is renovated endlessly.Physics and cosmology.
  4. 19How should we live? One thing changes. The source of the verdict.Ethics at every scale.
