A walk through the garden · Step 1 of 19 · What is there

What can you be sure of?

One record exists. You just made it.

Branch of philosophy: Logic. What cannot be denied, and what follows from it.

You have: Nothing. Just this page, and you reading it.

Where the question lives

Your eyes are on this line.

Light is coming off the screen. It is landing on the back of your eye. Something in you is following the words, one after the other, and turning them into sense. You are doing it now.

Hold on to that. Not to what the words say. To the plain fact that they are being read.

Every question on this site will need somewhere to stand. Why is there something rather than nothing. What a mind is. Whether you are free. How to live. Each one is a big question, and big questions need ground under them that will not give way.

So the first question is the smallest one. Before anything else: what can you be sure of?

Why start here

Philosophy’s oldest questions have stood for centuries. They have been asked from many sides. None of the answers has closed them in a way the field has agreed on.

The 420 Code does not start from a claim. Not from a proposal either. It starts from a fact that cannot be refused without confirming it. The book keeps one rule from there to its end, and this walk keeps it too: no step asks you to accept anything the steps before it did not give you.

That rule only works if the first step costs you nothing. Here it is.

What the 420 Code sees

You are reading this sentence.

That is a record. Something has been written, somewhere. On the screen. On your retina. In the part of you following the words.

A record is a difference that was made and held. A footprint in sand. A memory. This sentence, read.

Now try to deny it. Say: no record has been made. Nothing is being read.

Look at what you just did. To deny the reading, you had to read your own denial. That reading is another record. The denial proves the thing it denies.

There is no place you can stand where the reading has not happened.

So here is the ground:

One record exists.

It is not a claim. It is not a proposal. It is not a belief you are asked to hold. It is a fact that cannot be refused without confirming it.

You just made it. Every reader who has reached this line made it too. If anything on this walk can be said to be certain, it is this: at least one record has happened.

The book puts it in four words: “The reading is the proof.”

This is the ground. Not a rule someone chose. A fact that holds, because denying it confirms it.

Everything on this site is built from this one sentence.

Try it. Say out loud: “Nothing is being read right now.” Then notice: you heard it, and you understood it. That was a reading. Your denial made another record.

What you now know. Here is a thing nobody can refuse: one record exists. You make it by reading. You make it again by denying it. It is the ground every step on this walk stands on.

Sit here

“There is no position you can stand in where the reading has not occurred.”
— Ø Dissolutions, The Axiom

Where it would die

Every claim on this site stands beside what would break it. This one is the exception, and it says why.

Nothing can kill this step. A report that no record was written would itself be a record. There is no position from which the reading has not happened.

That is why it is the ground. Every kill switch on every other step stands on it.
